This is the playtesting repository for a fantasy adventure roleplaying game. It contains guidelines for creating fantasy characters and campaigns for the enjoyment of a large group. Each participant will add to the campaign either as a Player or a Referee. The resulting collaboration may continue for years and develop into a game of tremendous complexity. These rules on this site are only intended to start a game quickly, and there will obviously be places where important details are skipped over or missed. It is encouraged that the referee and players approach these rulings with an open mind and be willing to create their own game rather than keeping to the “letter of the law.” When there are disputes about the rules, the role of the referee is to resolve the dispute by making a ruling. Players must accept the final ruling of their referee. If you have any questions or requests for clarification, please email the Skeleton King. I have paid a heavy price to summon his services, so please ask him whatever you'd like to know.
This game is the result of so much time and work that sometimes I almost forget how much fun I'm having with this game. My players, or rather my play-testers, deserve mention. They are the true drivers of the game, the ones without whom there is no wonder, awe, and amazement in the hobby. Without my friends, I would not have become an artist and my life would have much less of the magic that is a life spent making beautiful things with other people. Thank you so much for playing!
The game is played around a table of three to ten people in sessions which last between two and six hours. One of these players will take on the role of the Referee, or Magic Master. This player will use this book to create a fantasy world for everyone to explore. The Referee has the right to appoint a player to the role of Referee if they so choose. Campaigns can include at least twenty-five people in various game sessions, all exploring the same world, with more than one referee.
To begin play, the referee prepares or creates a dungeon or other adventure, where monsters and traps guard treasure that characters need to level up. When the first game session begins, each player creates one or more Player Characters (PCs). The referee can change the way characters are created to suit their game. As players advance in skill and their characters advance in level, they can explore greater challenges deeper in the dungeon or farther out in the wilderness.
Play will organically lead to players setting their own goals for their characters, changing the fantasy world irrevocably with their actions. Characters can create buildings, factions, kingdoms, and religions for the game world if the player can put that character in a position to do so. The very landscape will change, as players construct buildings, move armies around, and appropriate wealth from powerful non-player characters.
